Durbar Hall Art Gallery is one of the notable cultural & artistic landmarks in Kochi, Kerala. History & Royal Heritage

The history of Durbar Hall Art Gallery is closely connected with the former Kingdom of Cochin. The Durbar Hall and its approximately two-acre grounds were historically used for royal gatherings, public events, exhibitions, cultural programmes, sports activities, military parades & temple-related processions. The location also witnessed important developments in the political and administrative history of the former Cochin State. 

Over the years, the building served several different purposes. It was used as a court, government office and other institutional facilities before becoming associated with museum and cultural activities. During its period under the Department of Archaeology, the building was known as the Parikshith Thampuran Museum. The archaeological collection was later moved to the Hill Palace, while the Durbar Hall building developed into an important centre for visual arts. 

Kerala Lalithakala Akademi & Art Promotion

The Durbar Hall Art Gallery has a strong connection with the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi, an autonomous cultural institution dedicated to the promotion of fine arts in Kerala.
